OFF THE BEATEN TRACK | PART 2

Continuing the previous theme, the first five images were shot in what I like to call my “secret place”; a spot on the banks of the beautiful River Earn as it flows through Strathearn. I doubt if the place is really that secret as the Earn is very popular with anglers. On this occasion I had the place all to myself, captivated by the autumn colours at their peak and mirrored in the calm waters of the Earn. Also of interest at this spot were the alien-like clumps of vivid green weed swishing gently in the river; these made fascinating studies.

The next couple of images are of Buchanty Spout on the River Almond and though I have lived in the county for 25 years, this was my first visit. The “Spout” is really a pothole with a powerful waterfall flowing through a narrow gorge. The surrounding rocks were quite slippery and needed much caution as I moved from one place to another. Interestingly, according to Wikipedia there are ten rivers in Perthshire; I don’t know how accurate that is as the River Almond wasn’t even mentioned on the list!

Further north at Newton Bridge on the A822, the River Almond disappears into a delightful side glen branching westwards from what is known as The Sma’ Glen. I have passed this junction of the glens so many times without stopping but always glancing up the minor glen and thinking how splendid it looked. On this occasion I couldn’t resist the amazing colours of the trees guarding the entrance to the side glen and happily spent the next hour or so strolling along the path by the side of the Almond.

Footnote | November 19, 2015:
In passing the same glen, I was sad to see that there wasn’t a single leaf remaining on the trees.
