HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH

With apologies to Belinda Carlisle for borrowing her song title but to my mind HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH well, in Scotland anyway. I’ve been to this place twice and on both occasions I’ve had an amazing sense of peace and tranquillity. In the meantime, I haven’t yet worked out if I’m an atheist or an agnostic but when it seems as if half of the world is trying to kill the other half in the name of religion with “heaven” as the reward, IMHO I think it might be better if we accepted that heaven is a place here on earth and make it the best we can while we’re here.

The worst moment for the atheist is when he is really thankful and has nobody to thank.

You could immerse yourself for many hours in photographing these rocks; I certainly did.

The colour treatment I used here is a bit removed from reality however the scene was flat and lacked colour. At first I tried a neutral black & white treatment but that didn’t do anything for me, before finally settling on this warm-toned mono version. That’s the wonderful thing about creating photographs for myself as I have no one else to please but my critical self!

The cove and the harbour are in private hands with the owner being particular about who and why photographs are taken on his property. I received permission to photograph here 3 years ago and happily received the owner’s blessing again this time around.

Harbour defences pictured from the business side of the wall at low tide, after a storm. This massive wall is true testament to the skill of those involved in 19th century harbour construction and that it resists Neptune’s force to this day.

An inter-tidal nest of pebbles cradled in a hollowed-out basin of rock. No re-arrangement of the pebbles was necessary; I love the composition and these muted colours.

I do my first processing in Lightroom; followed by a tidy up in Photoshop with a bit of “art work” in Nik Software Color Effects Pro 4 to finish. Over the years I have created various custom presets within the software which I tinker with on a case by case basis to suit the mood I’m looking for. The software helps me express what I might otherwise achieve if I had talent to draw or paint, which unfortunately I don’t.
